The Power of Empathy and Understanding
Dad warned the passenger next to him of his son's severe autism. But she was a speech therapist.
A speech pathologist helped a father and son with autism communicate on a flight. The boy was nonverbal, so the pathologist used symbols to help him express himself. The father was excited to learn about this new form of communication.
The speech pathologist's kindness and expertise greatly impacted the father, who was grateful to communicate with his son in a new way.
I just had such an affirming experience. On my 8hr intl flight back from a conference, I sat next to a father/son. In broken English, the father began to apologize/warn me that his ~10 yr-old son had severe nonverbal autism, and that this would like be a difficult journey. 1/
