She was thin-skinned. She was covered with a layer of reddish-brown due to the copper skin. When she was assembled on Bedloe's Island, known as a New York Harbor, she was brown and stayed this way for around 35 years. By 1920, the cooper skin had begun to oxidize and turn to the lovely sea green today.
